More about Ray Borgia
This year Glenwood Alumnus Ray Borgia honored us as the featured speaker at our 17th Annual Golf Outing Dinner. Ray specifically said he didn't want to turn the event into something to honor him, however, over 100 alumni turned out to our after golf dinner in good warm weather to personally chat with Ray and wish him and his family years of happiness. Ray came to Glenwood at age 9 with his 11 year old brother, Peter, in 1938, the year after founder Robert Todd Lincoln's wife passed. Ray worked on the farm in the days when the total land area of the school was over six times what it is today. Ray graduated from Glenwood School after being the Battalion Commander for three years and received the first Sykes Award. In January of 1957 he returned to Glenwood after serving in Korea to become our Military instructor, teaching R.O.T.C. to the upper classmen and putting together the most excellent O3 Rifle carrying Precision Drill Teams ever seen during the era when the older Glenwood students carried M1 Rifles and were schooled in R.O.T.C. for the 5th Army Area. Married in 1961, Ray and Manuela raised 3 boys, all now married with children. Many alumni feel these boys are alumni brothers due to their camaraderie with Glenwood students at camp when Ray was Camp Director. It may have been about that time that Ray began to realize the alumni of Glenwood showed more feelings of brotherhood and had more camaraderie than regular High School or College alumni. He spread this feeling on to all the visiting alumni. Recently, Ray has put together our Alumni Museum with the help of our present Chairman Joe Hack, Jack Olson, Kevin Riley and others. Leaving Glenwood at the end of 2006, Ray will have been on this campus 60 years, our Longest LIFE TIME member. He shall have his own office at our new Alumni Headquarters where the old Dean’s office was located in the Butler Administration Building. Alumni are always returning to the campus and chat with Ray as he always has more great stories to tell. He enjoys seeing alumni return to visit. The last one that stopped by was Evan Wallace, 39-42, a classmate of Ray's and past shop teacher at Glenwood.
