   Annual Fund-raiser Raffle
We would like to invite you once again to participate in our Annual Raffle. This is one of our largest fundraisers of the year. Last year we raised over $7,000 for the Association to continue making a lasting difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters of Glenwood School. Since the start of this fundraising event we have raised approximately $23,000, and we couldn't be more grateful and excited. Thanks to your continued support every year, we have been able to make this fundraising event a huge success.
This year, we have been given the opportunity to expand our reaches by inviting the parents of the students to participate in our Annual Raffle. Having this opportunity to reach out to even more supporters, may well make this the highest grossed raffle event yet. The money that we raise from the raffle gives us the opportunity to continue in funding many projects that we participate in, such as, the Annual Senior Essay Contest, Camp Getschow's Wildlife Education Fund, supplies for Camp Getschow, as well as other essential items.
One of our main goals is to fund a major project at Glenwood's Camp Getschow located on 180 acres in Northern Wisconsin, a truly unique opportunity for more than 100 children to build self-esteem and confidence while developing a variety of new skills, including swimming, fishing, archery, water sports arts and crafts, woodworking, and learning about nature first hand.
You can help the students of Glenwood School by purchasing or selling the tickets that we have enclosed with this letter. We are asking you to make a true effort to sell all your tickets and return the stubs filled out completely. We will accept the first 1,500 tickets that are returned, so make sure you're the first to mail yours back Anything that you can do will be greatly appreciated. Remember that 100% of all of our fundraising efforts go directly to benefit the students of this great school. With these difficult economic times Glenwood has still made a commitment to keeping Camp Getschow open, and we look forward to partnering with the school in enhancing the summer experience for the kids.
   12th Alumni Camp Work Weekend
Father's Day fell during the Alumni Work Weekend this year, but that didn't stop many of our families from spending time with their dad's/husbands. There were approximately thirty-one alumni and their families that participated in the work activities at Camp Getschow on Father's Day Weekend! The total head count was sixty-four people. I would like to “thank” everyone for calling and letting me know ahead of time when they would be arriving, and how many people would be in their party. I forgot to get a list of names as I've done in the past so everyone knew who came and worked.
We accomplished many work activities this year as we have in the past. Many alumni came to camp a day early so some of the work was done on Thursday, which allowed everyone a little free time to enjoy camp, and fish on Saturday. The general cleanup was the main priority to get the camp ready for the kids.
Everyone joined in before breakfast on Saturday to clean the beach area. Every year Joe Hack brings his sprayer and saves us a tremendous amount of paint brushing and rolling of paint. He spray painted the Laundry Palace and the wood storage shed (known to the older alumni as “Timber & Pine”), and the east wall of the dining hall. Hank Brady, Ike Lewis, and Jarvis painted the sideboard on the Northeast corner of the dining hall. Mr. Borgia and crew went into the woods and found 5 pine trees that they transplanted in the area west of the dining hall. Jack Olson and son Evan came to camp on Thursday and cleaned the “Magic Camp Fire” area and weed whacked a large area on the north side of camp. Tom and Bonnie took care of the gym floor, as usual. There were many jobs done by many other alumni too numerous to mention. A wonderful, “Thank You!” to everyone else that showed up and assisted with the cleanup, including the camp counselors this year. When I sent them to do a job, it was done quickly and efficiently.
Kevin Dawson made a special trip to camp after many years to join us for the work weekend. Kevin used to run the Indian Lore Program back when I was a camper, and provided us with many great memories. I remember the Indian Lore Program having as many as 30-40 participants. One year they lit the camp fire from a wire attached from a tree to the camp fire. Since it was dark at night when we lit the campfire, it appeared as a bolt of light coming from the sky. Kevin was always known for the snake dance. He usually found two large pine snakes and danced around the campfire with one in his mouth. When he finished his dance he would throw the snakes over the heads of the campers into the woods. I remember the campers ducking as the snakes went over their heads, and everyone would chuckle. Oh, those wonderful “great” years at camp Glenwood.
Camp wouldn't be camp if Mr. Borgia wasn't there. I would like to thank Bob McClain and Glenwood School for allowing the Alumni Association to again participate in pre-camp activities, and to make camp as enjoyable now as it was for us as campers back many years ago. Again, I would like to thank everyone for their participation during Alumni Weekend. Until next year, may the Lord keep you safe so that we can again join in the camaraderie in the “Great Northwoods”.
God Bless All of You!

Our Annual Golf Outing
On August 22, 2009, the Alumni Association hosted its 19th Annual Golf Outing, the event raised over $1,800. The golfing portion of the event was held at Lincoln Oaks G.C. in Crete, IL, and the Dinner was held in the Irwin Center at Glenwood School's South Campus in Glenwood , IL. The weather was beautiful for the 27 golfers in attendance, a modified shot gun start got the event underway and provided for a timely return of all teams for the open bar held at the course. Ooga Booga Bar Ba Q provided an excellent dinner for the 40 quests in attendance. This is the second year that Alum Peter Vanda and his crew produced superior results.
Our champions this year are Vaenessa & Eric Yarbrough, you may remember that they also won in 2006. Vaenessa also won the Closest to the Pin trophy this year. Second place went to current Glenwood President Sam Banks and his lovely wife Maureen. Mrs. Banks also took home the Longest Drive trophy. Longest Putt went to Glenwood's Past President John Irwin.
Last year alumnus Leroy Hazen of Villa Rica, Georgia, gathered the Class of 1958 together at our Golf outing dinner. Those that participated in that 50 year reunion at our Golf Outing dinner, joined us rather than joining the Bloom High School 50th Reunion event. This year we got the word out too late to have the same participation for the reunion of the Class of 1959. However, Jim Brady and Gerry Den Hamer did drop by to see their many friends that came to our Golf Outing Dinner before attending the Bloom event. With the help of alumnus Louis Jamison we hope to organize our 1960 reunion next year in better fashion.
Many thanks go out to all who participated, volunteers, sponsors, golfers and dinner guests. See our website for photos and please visit our sponsors and let them know you heard about them through the association. Our sponsors this year were:
