Camp Weekend
Hello Glenwood Brothers & Sisters:

What a productive Alumni Weekend we had in 2007. There were 30 alumni, family and friends that showed up for the weekend. The following alumni were a part of the weekend festivities: John, Cathy, & Liz Rosenberry, Jim Staggs, Joe Ramos, Thomas Morgan, Caleb Novak, Genaro Silveyra, Ray Borgia, Andrew Magana, Jack Cartlidge, Pat & Ryan Kyle, Rich Rothaupt, Kenneth, Stephanie, & Kenny Abels, Hank Brady, Jarvis Richards, Joe Hack, Tom O'Brien & Bonnie Chrastka, Kevin Riley, Jack & Evan Olson, Chris & Gail Hernandez, Bob & Rose McClain, and Kenny Smith.

I appreciated the effort that everyone gave over Alumni Weekend. The major task was to paint the outside of the gymnasium. It had been quite a while since this building was painted. Joe “the man” Hack and his “fabulous painting crew” which consisted of Genaro Silveyra, Andrew Magana, Jack Cartlidge, Thomas Morgan and Caleb Novak took on the task. It took this crew one day to scrape and clean the outside surface, and one day to spray paint the entire gym (GREAT JOB FELLAS!!!).

Another major task that was accomplished was the painting of the repaired footbridge by “Faraway”. Ike Lewis, Hank Brady, and Jarvis Richards spent two full days painting the bridge with brushes. Also, a group of the younger guys, too numerous to mention, cleaned the brush and debris out from under the bridge. Other tasks from the weekend included stacking hay bales for the archery range backstop, archery targets to the archery range, stacking the major pile of wood from the storm, moved new picnic tables to the south side cabins, cut and stack firewood & hang signs for the Magic Campfire, painted urinal water pipes, cleaned the waterfront, put up the scoreboard on the ball diamond, assisted with placing the dock in the water, and other odd jobs, too numerous to mention.

Every year the gym floor gets waxed and preserved. This is a big job preparing the floor, and then getting the wax on smooth and even. Tom O'Brien and Bonnie Chrastka have done the floor for the last 5-6-7 years? I would like to thank them for all they do in preserving and cleaning the gym, and congratulate them on their engagement (you make a “great” couple!).

Jack Olson worked very hard weed-eating the beach area, Magic Campfire area, and around the camp in general. Pat Kyle is always willing to assist where he’s needed. Kevin Riley and co-worker Kenny Smith took the old ovens that no longer work out of the kitchen and hauled them to Phillips. The younger alumni worked very hard this year, assisting wherever needed, and we appreciate your participation in the alumni organization (we need more young alumni involved).

Bob and Rose McClain (as you all know) do an Outstanding Job as camp caretakers. There were numerous tables, benches, etc. made during the off-season for the kids. This fall their major endeavor will be to make log furniture. I’m sure they will do a great job! I would like to thank them for the cleanup of that major storm last year, and for making Camp Getschow a much cleaner place for the alumni to start during our Alumni Weekend.

Everyone involved in “Alumni Weekend” or that has been involved in the past, can be very proud of the way Camp Getschow looks this year, compared to 12 years ago. We have made a difference in the lives of many children over the years, as Glenwood made a difference in our lives not so long ago! I would like to compliment and thank Mr. John Irwin, Mark Holstein, Tony Corsello, and everyone at Glenwood School for all they do for the children, and allowing the Alumni Association to be a part of the “TEAM”. And as usual, camp wouldn’t be camp if it weren’t for Mr. Borgia’s presence, reminiscing about camp and all the friends he’s made over the years. “He still doesn’t understand that we’re the lucky ones to have known such a fine gentleman as himself.”

Until next year, my friends, thanks again for all of your hard work and cooperation!

May God Bless You!
John Rosenberry, "Class of 72"
